Since 1934, the Illinois State Historical Society has erected more than 500 historical markers statewide. Subjects of historical significance to Illinois are co-sponsored by local organizations and supporters. The Illinois State Historical Society coordinates the placement and management of historical markers throughout the state.

Save the date. Bill Furry, Executive Director of the Illinois State Historical Society, will give a program for the Morgan County Historical Society on Wednesday, May 18 at the Jacksonville Public Library (201 W College Ave, Jacksonville, IL 62650) at 7 pm. The program will be on the Donner Party. This wagon train set out from Springfield in the spring of 1846 for California only to meet tragedy in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Cost: This program is free and open to the public.
