Historical Markers

Since 1934, the Illinois State Historical Society has erected more than 500 historical markers statewide. Subjects of historical significance to Illinois are co-sponsored by local organizations and supporters. The Illinois State Historical Society coordinates the placement and management of historical markers throughout the state.

The Make Reconstruction History Visible mapping project (a Zinn Education Project) is an opportunity for students and teachers to identify and advocate for public recognition of Reconstruction history in their community and the significant accomplishments made by newly freed people and their white allies.

Coles County Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony

The Coles County Regional Planning & Development Commission's Historic Preservation Advisory Council and the Association for the Preservation of Historic Coles County invite the public to attend their annual awards program at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17th at the Burgess-Osborne Memorial Auditorium located at 1701 Wabash Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Music will be provided by the Jay Ferguson Trio.
