Imagine a baseball field with a stream running through the outfield, a literal water hazard for ballplayers or a large crowd watching a game near the junction of Decatur’s two busiest railroads. If you can’t, Millikin University’s Dr. Bob Sampson of the Department of History and Political Science will explain this and more, including why the game was spelled as two words. You’ll meet the young man who brought the game to the city and played in 1866 and 1867 under the flag of the “McPhersons.” Decatur’s role in the “base ball mania” that was sweeping across Illinois between 1865 and 869 will be discussed, as well as the high and low points of the “McPhersons” brief history and what happened in later life to their leading players. The presentation is based on research Sampson has conducted for the past few years on this topic.
