How Springfield, Not Decatur, Stayed the State Capital

Decatur Public Library

Official Macon County Historian, Mark Sorensen, will reveal how and why Springfield became and has remained Illinois’ state capital, as opposed to Decatur or another locale. This is the second in a series of library programs covering aspects of Decatur and Illinois history leading up to the state’s Bicentennial this December.

Mr. Sorensen is the former assistant director of the Illinois State Archives, past president of the Illinois State Historical Society, and in April 2015 received one of four Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Illinois State Historical Society. He has written many articles for various publications, which can be found in the library’s local history room.
