History Sparkles!

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum

We call it history, but Illinois’ First Ladies participated in activities their contemporaries could have considered scandalous! Enjoy an evening with our historians, Director Alan Lowe, Dr. Samuel Wheeler, Ian Hunt and Dr. Christian McWhirter, as they share the seldom told anecdotes of four First Ladies that point to the validity of this popular refrain: "Well-behaved women seldom make history" by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.

Our newest exhibit, From Illinois to the White House, focuses on the Illinois Presidents; this evening turns the spotlight to their wives, our First Ladies:

  • Mary Lincoln - two centuries after her birth, Mary continues to have passionate defenders, as well as vocal detractors!
  • Julia Grant - an extraordinary woman who was raised in a home of wealth, privilege, and slavery.
  • Nancy Reagan - a remarkable, courageous and accomplished First Lady, lived a true love story with the President.
  • Michelle Obama - a continuing influence on American politics and culture, met Barack Obama at the Sidley Austin law firm.
Hear fun, seldom known anecdotes and stories about the four First Ladies that will bring history to life. ALPLM Historians Director Alan Lowe, Dr. Samuel Wheeler, Ian Hunt and Dr. Christian McWhirter will accept questions and answers after their 20-minute presentations.

Delicious desserts and sparkling wine served all evening, attire is business casual.

Music for the evening will be provided by the Beth Anderson Flute Choir.

Museum will open at 6:30pm. Presentations will begin at 6:45pm and end at 9:00pm.

To ensure a great experience, a limited number of tickets are available for this event ($31.50 Foundation Members / $35 General Admission). E-TICKET must be presented for entry (printed or on digital device).
