Headin' to the Promised Land: The Great Migration

The African–American Cultural & Genealogical Society and Mt. Zion High School

Join the African–American Cultural & Genealogical Society and Mt. Zion High School at the opening of their 2019 exhibit Headin' to the Promised Land: The Great Migration.

The Great Migration was a time when African–Americans moved from the "Jim Crow" South to the North particularly between the World Wars (1910s-1940s). As African–Americans moved, so did their culture, and Blues music also evolved. Seeking a better life and more opportunities up north, African–Americans nevertheless encountered racism and discrimination in their new environment. Join us as we highlight this period of history at the unveiling of this latest exhibit at the African–American Cultural & Genealogical Society in Decatur.

After a brief ceremony, join us next door at the museum for the unveiling and a reception including tours.
