Book Signing: Lincoln in the Illinois Legislature

Books on the Square

Ron J. Keller will discuss his new book, Lincoln in the Illinois Legislature. He will be introduced by State Rep. Tim Butler whose district includes much of the same area Lincoln represented.

Abraham Lincoln served as a member of the Illinois Legislature from 1834 to 1842. This book offers insights to understanding how his experiences in the legislative years helped strengthen his character and shrewdness as he re-entered the political arena in the 1850s and became our 16th president in 1861. Keller’s writing presents the argument that Lincoln’s character traits strengthened as an Illinois representative and helped form the basis of the political philosophies associated with the man throughout his later career — economic opportunity and the right to rise, democratic equality, and to a lesser extent his hatred of slavery. Ron J. Keller is an associate professor of history and political science and the managing director of the Abraham Lincoln Center for Character Development at Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois. A past director of the Lincoln Heritage Museum, he serves on the board of the Abraham Lincoln Association and is an adviser to The Lincoln Forum.
