Common Law of Dower & Coverture

The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois

Researching your female ancestors can sometimes prove to be difficult. Our guest speaker, Micki Faruzzi, will help unravel the centuries of laws and terms that have defined our female ancestors. Her book The Laws Against Women, published by the Hamilton County Historical Society, explains old terms like “Dower, Coverture, Whole Blood, Half Blood, or the Statute of Descent.”  Since these terms are no longer used, when we research today, we may not know how the terms were used or affected women. In past centuries women were kept from owning property, or controlling anything which made their future uncertain and sometimes no paper trail to follow. This presentation will be certainly entertaining and informative.
