Morris Library, SIU Carbondale
Visit Morris Library's Hall of Presidents and Chancellors and view a poster exhibit featuring several early maps from the library's Special Collections Research Center that show how southern Illinois was settled before the rest of the state.
Exhibit is open December 18, 2017 through March 30, 2018.
McDonough County Historical Society
The McDonough County Historical Society is pleased to welcome Dr. John Hallwas, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Western Illinois University, who will give a talk entitled, "W.H.Hainline: Newspaper Editor, Local Historian, and Community Builder." He also will comment on the release of a new book, Memory and Community: The Life and Writings of W.H. Hainline, edited by John Hallwas and Kathy Nichols.
Illinois Bicentennail Commission
On December 3, 2018, we will celebrate Illinois’ 200th birthday with a gala party at the United Center in Chicago.
For 200 years Illinoisans have made exceptional contributions to their communities, to the State, to the country and to society. Throughout 2018, municipalities across the state, communities, colleges, museums, organizations and many others will share those names and stories. The Bicentennial Birthday Gala will be the culmination of a yearlong engagement to commemorate and archive the Illinois Bicentennial Hall of Fame.
Morgan County Historical Society
Under the auspices of the Morgan County Historical Society (MCHS), Prairieland Chautauqua will produce Illinois: A Bicentennial Celebration. This event consists of twelve, independent, hour-long programs presented over the Labor Day weekend, 2018, reflecting on 200 years of Illinois history. This event is free and open to the public.
Liberty Bell of the West Chapter, Illinois Society, NSDAR
The Liberty Bell of the West Chapter, Illinois Society, NSDAR will erect a monument in Chester, Illinois at a site between the Randolph County Court House and the Randolph County Museum. The monument will honor Randolph County's patriots of the American Revolution while recognizing the county's heritage as the birthplace of Illinois. The dedication of the monument will coincide with the observance of the Illinois Bicentennial.
