Marker Description:
These pillars served as the gateway to Carthage College, which enrolled men and women at this site from 1870 to 1964. Founded by Lutheran clergy in 1847 and counting future President Abraham Lincoln among its trustees, the institution withstood turbulence in two prior locations to find stability in Carthage. Maintaining a link to this historic campus, students hauled an iconic boulder known as “Kissing Rock” to Kenosha, Wisconsin, when the college ultimately relocated there. Prairieland Investment Group, LLC, purchased this property in 2007, preserving and adapting some campus buildings for use in education for the swine industry.
