2018 Illinois History Symposium on Statehood Day in Springfield
ISHS and University of Illinois Springfield Alumni SAGE Society
The Illinois State Historical Society and the University of Illinois Springfield Alumni SAGE Society will host an all-day symposium on Illinois history, December 3, 2018, at the new UIS Student Union. The day-long event includes the SAGE Society's "Lunch and Learn" program, which will focus on immigration and the African diaspora.
Morning Sessions
9:30 a.m. – Michael Wiant, Ph.D., former Head of Anthropology at the Illinois State Museum and Director of Dickson Mounds Museum, will present
Bicentennial Primer: Ten Things Every Immigrant Should Know about the First Illinoisans.
10:30 a.m. – Bill Kemp, Librarian and Archivist of the McLean County Museum of History, will present
Lincoln's Lost Speech, examining the fiery speech on territorial expansion of slavery into the western territories that set the stage for Lincoln's rise to the Presidency.
Lunch and Learn
11:30 a.m. – Dr. Hinda Seif, UIS Associate Professor, Sociology/Anthropology and Women & Gender Studies, will present
A Nation of Immigrants:
Historical Perspectives on Immigration to the Land of Lincoln.
Dr. Tiffani Saunders, UIS Instructor of Sociology and African American Studies, will present
The African Diaspora: Communities Descended and
Emigrated from Africa's Peoples to the Prairie State.
Afternoon Sessions
1:45 p.m. – Devin Hunter, Ph.D., UIS Professor of Public History, and students of the program will present
History Harvest: Bicentennial Projects of the
UIS Public History Program.
2:45 p.m. – Robert Sampson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History, Millikin University, will present
Bicentennial Exam: What Every Illinoisan Needs
to Know About the First 200 Years of Illinois History.
