Illinois Heritage Magazine

Illinois Heritage, the popular history magazine of the Illinois State Historical Society, was established in 1997 to encourage professional and amateur historians, museum professionals, teachers, genealogists, journalists, and other researchers to explore and write about Prairie State history for a broad audience.

Illinois Heritage is published six times per year and is available as a benefit of membership in the Illinois State Historical Society. Individual editions can also be purchased by contacting our office directly. Visit our Membership section for membership options and information.

Illinois History Symposium

Co-sponsored by the Illinois State Historical Society and the UIS Alumni SAGE Society

On Tuesday, December 3, the Illinois State Historical Society hosts its annual Illinois History Symposium, in conjunction with a UIS "Lunch and Learn" program.
Join us for one or all of the Symposium sessions. Morning and afternoon presentations are free to attend with complimentary snack refreshments. The Lunch and Learn program is $23/person and requires a reservation.  

Morning Sessions    

  • 9:30 a.m.: Women’s Work: The Scholarship and Activism of Suffrage-Era Women at Illinois State University presented by Dr. April Karlene Anderson-Zorn, University Archivist, Illinois State University.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Every Girl Pulling for Victory - Suffrage and Service during the Great War presented by Debra M. Dudek, author and Head of Adult & Teen Services, Fountaindale Public Library District.

Lunch and Learn – 11:30 a.m.

  • Casting Lincoln: The Sculptures of John McClarey presented by John McClarey, internationally renowned sculptor of Decatur, Illinois. McClarey’s works are sited throughout the U.S. and international locales in Russia, Japan and Cuba.
  • The Scent of Wisdom: Perfumes, Olfactory Art and Philosophy presented by Dr. Larry Shiner, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, History and Visual Arts, Department of Philosophy, UI Springfield.

Afternoon Sessions

  • 1:30 p.m.: Suffragist or Suffragette, What is the Difference? presented by Tina Beaird, Genealogy/ Local History Librarian, Plainfield School District.           
  • 2:30 p.m.: Women's Rights, Railroads and the Illinois Constitutional Convention of 1870 presented by Dr. Bernard H. Sieracki, author and instructor, Public Administration, UI Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and UI Springfield.

Reservations are required for the Lunch and Learn program.
