Illinois Heritage Magazine

Illinois Heritage, the popular history magazine of the Illinois State Historical Society, was established in 1997 to encourage professional and amateur historians, museum professionals, teachers, genealogists, journalists, and other researchers to explore and write about Prairie State history for a broad audience.

Illinois Heritage is published six times per year and is available as a benefit of membership in the Illinois State Historical Society. Individual editions can also be purchased by contacting our office directly. Visit our Membership section for membership options and information.

Cemetery Preservation Workshop

Join us on Saturday, June 12 (rain date June 26) for a Cemetery Preservation Workshop at the Villa Marie Catholic Retreat Center and Newcomber Cemetery, 1903 East Lake Drive, Springfield, Illinois. The workshop will be facilitated by cemetery preservations/restorationists John Heider and Dawn Cobb, who will share their vast knowledge and expertise on best practices in burial grounds maintenance and repair.

The classroom portion of the workshop will be held at the Villa Maria Catholic Retreat Center, 1903 East Lake Drive in Springfield, and the field portion will be held in the Newcomer Cemetery just beyond the Villa Maria parking lot. Participants should bring a hat, gloves, sun block, and a water bottle. A lawn chair and a camera might also be desirable. Shovels, trowels, and other equipment will be available on site.

Registration Fee (includes box lunch): $75 per person, $100 per couple. Makes checks payable to: Illinois State Historical Society (ISHS) or call with credit card information.
