Illinois Heritage Magazine

Illinois Heritage, the popular history magazine of the Illinois State Historical Society, was established in 1997 to encourage professional and amateur historians, museum professionals, teachers, genealogists, journalists, and other researchers to explore and write about Prairie State history for a broad audience.

Illinois Heritage is published six times per year and is available as a benefit of membership in the Illinois State Historical Society. Individual editions can also be purchased by contacting our office directly. Visit our Membership section for membership options and information.

Cemetery Preservation Workshop

ISHS, Madison County Historical Society and the St. Clair County Historical Society

The Madison County Historical Society, the St. Clair County Historical Society, and the Illinois State Historical Society are hosting two separate one-day cemetery preservation workshops. The expert instructors are John Heider and Dawn Cobb. John is an accomplished cemetery preservation specialist with decades of experience. Dawn is an archaeologist specializing in cemetery preservation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The workshops will take place on May 20 and May 21, 2022, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., at the St. John’s Lutheran Church & Cemetery located at 7201 W. Main Street in Maryville, Illinois.

Students will learn about researching and preserving historic cemeteries. The workshop includes classroom sessions and fieldwork in the historic St. John’s Lutheran Church plus a box lunch.
Attendance is limited to 12 people each day. Sign up ASAP.
