Illinois Heritage Magazine

Illinois Heritage, the popular history magazine of the Illinois State Historical Society, was established in 1997 to encourage professional and amateur historians, museum professionals, teachers, genealogists, journalists, and other researchers to explore and write about Prairie State history for a broad audience.

Illinois Heritage is published six times per year and is available as a benefit of membership in the Illinois State Historical Society. Individual editions can also be purchased by contacting our office directly. Visit our Membership section for membership options and information.

2018 Illinois History Symposium on Statehood Day in Springfield

The Illinois State Historical Society and the University of Illinois Springfield Alumni SAGE Society will host an all-day symposium on Illinois history, December 3, 2018, at the new UIS Student Union. The day-long event includes the SAGE Society's "Lunch and Learn" program, which will focus on immigration and the African diaspora. 

Alexander Hesler's Abraham Lincoln Portrait Arrives in Jefferson County

A high-quality reproduction of a famous Abraham Lincoln photograph will be presented to the 5th District Appellate Court on Thursday, November 1. The unveiling ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m. in the Appellate Court building, North 14th and Main Streets, Mount Vernon. The event is open to the public.
