Antonio De Mattos and the Protestant Portuguese Community in Antebellum Illinois - 2aff0176-87c3-1411-02e7-3cbef4313186
Manufacturer: David J. Langum
Antonio De Mattos and the Protestant Portuguese Community in Antebellum Illinois

David Langum's compact study blends biography with an examination of the communities of Portuguese Protestants established in Morgan County Illinois in the late 1840s. Focusing in large part on the life and work of his great-grandfather Antonio Joaquim de Mattos, Jr., he places de Mattos squarely within the context of nineteenth-century Portuguese life, both on the Madeira Islands and in the exile communities Portuguese Protestants built in Jacksonville and Springfield, Illinois.
