Over the years the Society has accumulated many books and since it is neither a research center nor a lending library, we have created this Store to make these books available for purchase. Most are single title items in like new condition. In addition to books, we are also offering for sale back issues of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society and Illinois Heritage, art work, and stationery. All proceeds from these sales will be used to support the Illinois State Historical Society.

This bibliography lists and describes manuscripts acquired by the Illinois State Historical Library during 1964-1965. Collections are entered according to catalog titles and arranged alphabetically. The name-subject index is keyed to the numerical listing of the entries.


The 137 collections reported in the bibliography represent more than 330,000 manuscripts. The largest accession of 1964-1965 was the Scott W. Lucas Collection, consisting of 240,000 items. Other major acquisitions were the Lawrence Y. Sherman Papers, 69,000 items; and the Elizabeth (Stevenson) Ives Collection, 12,000 items. Six other collections had more than 1,000 items each; eight had 100 to 1,000 items; and 122 had less than 100 each.


Forty-eight of the 137 collections pertain to the Civil War. Thirty-six Illinois regiments are represented in these collections, which include 350 letters, 13 diaries, 5 memoirs, 2 sketchbooks, and 44 documents.
