The David Davis Family Papers: A Descriptive Inventory

This publication is the third of a series of descriptive inventories of manuscripts in the Illinois State Historical Library. This volume is a detailed guide to the David Davis Family Papers, 1816-1943. The collection contains approximately 19,000 items (including 104 small bound items) and 27 separate bound volumes consisting primarily of correspondence and other records of David Davis (1815-1886), who was a lawyer in Bloomington, Illinois, circuit judge and friend of Abraham Lincoln’s on the Eight Judicial Circuit in Illinois in the 1850s, Lincoln’s appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court, and U.S. Senator during the 1870s and 1880s.

The collection also contains the papers of Davis’ wife, Sarah (Walker) Davis (1814-1879); his son, George Perrin Davis (1842-1917), his daughter, Sarah Worthington Davis (1852-1934); and other members of the Davis family. A few collateral collections acquired as part of the Davis Family Papers consist of the correspondence of relatives who were members of the Betts, Walker, and Hanna families and the papers of several of Davis’ friends, notably Leonard Swett and William Ward Orme.
