Eugene Debs and George Pullman in McHenry County

Woodstock Celebrates, Inc. and Illinois Labor History Society

Woodstock Celebrates and the Illinois Labor History Society are hosting a Eugene V. Debs/George Pullman event in Woodstock for Saturday and Sunday, 3 and 4 November.

Saturday, 3 November 
  • 10:00 p.m.-12:00 noon. The Gilded Age, a new documentary film about the 1880–1896 period, at Woodstock Public Library (414 West Judd Street).
  • 2:00 p.m. Stage Left Cafe (125 West Van Buren Street), Steve Aavang as Sheriff George Eckert, then introduces C.J. Martello as George Pullman.
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m. C.J. Martello does a one-man show as George Pullman.
  • 4:00-5:00 p.m. Gunnar Gitlin discusses the 1895 United States Supreme Court decision that sent Debs to serve six months in Old McHenry County Jail.
Sunday, 4 November [note clocks fall back 1 hour] 
  • 12:00-1:00 p.m. Walking Tour of Debs/Eckert Sites in Woodstock led by Steve Aavang as Sheriff Eckert.
  • 2:00 p.m. Stage Left Cafe, Steve Aavang as Sheriff George Eckert, then introduces Ernest Freeberg.
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m. Ernest Freeberg discusses the 1919 United States Supreme Court decision, Debs v. United States, that sent Debs to serve ten years in federal prisons in Moundsville, West Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia.
  • 4:00-5:00 p.m. Book signing of Ernest Freeberg's Democracy's Prisoner and exhibits of Debs and Pullman material  hosted by Read Between the Lynes.
All events are free to the public, however donations are encouraged for the specific purpose of renovating Old McHenry County Jail. Volunteers at each event will take cash and checks made payable to Woodstock Celebrates, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, that WCI will turn over to the City of Woodstock for the Old Jail.
