Ulysses S. Grant comes to Quincy

Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, Tri-States Civil War Round Table, and O-Donnell-Cookson Celebration of Life Home

Ulysses S. Grant portrayer Dr. Curt Fields will appear in Quincy on February 27. The program will be held at the O’Donnell-Cookson Celebration of Life Home at 1435 State Street and is free and open to the public. Reservations must be made, however, as seating is limited.

This evening with Grant is sponsored by the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, the Tri-States Civil War Round Table, and O’Donnell-Cookson. Dr. Fields, a popular living historian, is an avid student of the Civil War who offers a variety of programs about Grant; his topic on the 27th will be “Grant: The Desperate Years.” This presentation will cover Grant’s service in the Mexican War, his West Coast military assignments, and his repeated business failures prior to the War Between the States. Fields regularly appears on college campuses, at Round Table meetings, in reenactments, in educational films, and at National Park Service events. In 2015, he appeared as the General at the 150th Sesquicentennial events held at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Appomattox.

Prior to the evening’s talk, attendees will be treated to a variety of Grant-related photos and paintings, which will be shown in the round using the O’Donnell-Cookson multi-media system.

Also on display in the Home’s main chapel will be a variety of U. S. Grant memorabilia including glassware, china, papers, and a John Sartain mezzotint entitled “Lieut. General U. S. Grant.” A side chapel will contain an exhibit featuring a replica of Lincoln in his casket and catafalque.

Refreshments will be served by O’Donnell-Cookson. To reserve a seat, please call the HSQAC at 217-222-1835.
