During the 1800s Chicago experienced a meteoric rise. Early in the century it was little more than a vulnerable fort. By the 1890s the metropolis boasted over one million inhabitants and formed the center of the continent’s beef, pork, grain, and lumber trade. Join Illinois and Midwest Studies Historian Jacob Friefeld for a brief talk about nineteenth-century Chicago followed by a discussion on strategies and resources for teaching about the city and inserting it within the broader history curriculum.
