Call for Illinois History Day Judges!

Illinois History Day is a state-wide program that encourages students in grades 6-12 to create a variety of exciting research projects related to the annual theme. This year’s theme, selected by National History Day, is Communication in History: The Key to Understanding. Students from across the state spend months conducting extensive research and sharing their findings through exhibits, dramatic performances, documentaries, websites, and research papers. The students prepare their findings and present them at regional and state competitions in hopes of advancing to the national competition.

The Illinois History Day competition occurs in four regions: Northern, Central, Southern, and Chicago Metro. Thousands of students participate in their respective regional competitions in hopes of being selected to participate in the state-level competition held in Springfield. Each year, 750-1,000 students, representing all four regions, come together at the State competition where they share their projects, attend the awards ceremony, and learn if they will advance to the National History Day competition in June.

As a result of Covid-19 restrictions, all Illinois contests will be virtual this year and we need your help to evaluate our students’ projects at both the regional and state level competitions! Judging dates for the competitions are:

  • Regionals, March 27 - April 2
  • State, April 24 - May 2

All judges will receive training on the updated evaluation forms and judging protocols within the new system. Most judges will have anywhere from 6-10 projects to judge, depending on which categories they offer to judge. Judging projects usually takes around 4 hours total, but many judge teams move at their own pace. With the competition being virtual this year you will be able to work from the comfort of your home and will have the ability to communicate with your judging team virtually. You will be able to indicate which projects you are comfortable judging by filling out the judging interest form at the bottom of this email.

Once you have filled out the interest form we ask that you also sign-up for one of the available judge trainings below. We have added additional days to hopefully allow everyone to be able to attend. These sessions will provide important information that you will need for this year’s competition.

If you have volunteered in the past, thank you for your support of the Illinois History Day program. Hopefully, we can call on you again this year! If you have not been a volunteer with us before, we hope you can join us as we guide and nurture our young historians through this process.

Thank you for your interest and continued support of the Illinois History Day program!
