Understanding history provides important context to challenges we face in our own time. This program will feature screenings of “Warning Signs” film footage and a discussion with Lincoln scholar Dr. Jonathan White on Lincoln’s time in Congress and his politics, anti-Slavery efforts during this era, “Compromises” before 1850 and the Compromise of 1850, and misconceptions about our political institutions. The discussion will be followed by audience Q&A. Jon White is the author or editor of twelve books, including Abraham Lincoln and Treason in the Civil War: The Trials of John Merryman (2011), and Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln (2014), which was a finalist for both the Lincoln Prize and Jefferson Davis Prize, a “best book” in Civil War Monitor, and the winner of the Abraham Lincoln Institute’s 2015 book prize.
