The Route of Monarch Butterflies Along Historic Route 66 To Be Discussed

Sangamon County Historical Society

The migration pattern of Monarch butterflies along Route 66 through Sangamon County and a new site to promote the road’s rich history will be the topics of the Sangamon County Historical Society program at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 at the new Route 66 Experience complex on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The event is free and open to the public.

Monarch butterflies began traveling the route from northern and eastern United States to Texas and to breeding grounds in Mexico long before there was a Route 66. Their beauty and significance will be marked with a new site at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, just west of Peoria Road and north of Gate 2. The site includes four large raised beds of native Illinois plants that attract pollinators. Its design and historical significance as well as plans for future development of a permanent ecological destination will be discussed. The project is a collaboration of Susan Helm, member of the Route 66 Monarch Flyaway Group, the Springfield Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, Ace Sign Company, Illinois Department of Agriculture, and Illinois Department of Transportation.

Speakers include Helm, Stephanie Dobbs, habitat specialist with the Illinois Department of Transportation, representatives from Ace Sign Company, exhibit specialist Casey Claypool, executive director of Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway and member of the Mother Road Festival board, and Sarah Waggoner tourism manager for the Springfield Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Program goers will be able to tour the site and talk to the experts about what Route 66 represents both in local history as well as the area's ecology.
