Marion County (Illinois) Bicentennial Committee Planning Meeting Set

Marion County Board

County Board Chairman Debbie Smith has named District 5 County Board Member Adam Smith as the new Chairman of the Marion County Bicentennial Committee. Adam Smith has set the first meeting of the committee for this year for Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the County Board Meeting Room in the Marion County Sheriff’s Building (204 N. Washington) in Salem.

Everyone in the community is invited to attend this public meeting on Wednesday to discuss the various ideas and suggestions for activities and commemorations throughout the Bicentennial year of 2023. If you are unable to attend, you may email your ideas to:

The County Board has heard from local historical leaders over the past year to consider activities that would highlight 200 years of history of Marion County. On the actual birthdate of January 24, there will be a program and presentation by State Representative Blaine Wilhour at the Courthouse beginning at 5:00 p.m. prior to the regular County Board Meeting. All are invited to attend.

Preliminary plans are under way to host a “Beans & Cornbread Cook-off” on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the historical United Methodist Church across from the County Courthouse beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a program to include a special presentation by U. S. Congressman Mike Bost.

Committee Chairman Adam Smith points out that fifty years ago in 1973 the 8-day Sesquicentennial Celebration in September and October included things like a celebration ball at the Salem Elks, a special church service at the Salem Community High School, an antique car show, kiddie carnival, teen dance and even a parade led by the governor.

Contact: Debbie Smith at 618-267-0695 or Adam Smith oat618-322-1433.
