Lewis and Clark State Historic Site Bus Tour

A half-day bus tour to the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site on Saturday, May 13, is being offered through a new partnership between the Madison County Historical Society (MCHS) and the Main Street Community Center (MSCC) in Edwardsville. It is hoped that this will be the first of many opportunities to explore local history. MSCC has experience with bus tours, while MCHS knows history, making the partnership a natural one for trips to local historic sites.
Advance registration is required for the tour that begins and ends at the Main Street Community Center at 1003 N. Main Street in Edwardsville. The trip is from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Registration fee is $50 and includes programming, bus transportation, entry fees, snacks and beverages.
The timing for this tour couldn’t be better since it comes on the anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s departure. The date will be observed with demonstrations (artillery, cooking, sewing, etc.) artisans demonstrating skills from another time and living history re-enactors. All of this is in addition to exhibits that include a full-scale cutaway construction of the boat used by Lewis and Clark, a reconstructed cabin and many hands-on exhibits.
The tour will begin with a brief overview of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by a historian before leaving the Main Street Community Center and end with a visit to the confluence where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers meet. No refunds will be issued unless the trip is cancelled by Main Street Community Center/Madison County Historical Society or if there is someone on a waiting list who can/will take your place. Full payment is due at the time of registration.
Last year, MCHS held its first Summer History Camp and the only complaint it heard was from folks wishing there was a similar program for adults. This tour is not a week-long camp, however, it will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about Madison County history.
