The April quarterly meeting of the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois will include opening the GSSI section of the John A. Logan College library for your research pleasure. The GSSI genealogy section contains books from most of the southern Illinois counties, several other states, and even books on the Mayflower passengers and their descendants. Board members will be there to assist with your search and try to answer your questions.

Official Macon County Historian, Mark Sorensen, will reveal how and why Springfield became and has remained Illinois’ state capital, as opposed to Decatur or another locale. This is the second in a series of library programs covering aspects of Decatur and Illinois history leading up to the state’s Bicentennial this December.

Decatur Bicentennial Kick-off and Statue Dedication

To open the Decatur Public Library’s events and programming in celebration of Illinois’ Bicentennial, we will be hosting an unveiling and dedication of “The Dream for a Greater Decatur” by artist John McClarey. The statue commemorates Governor Joseph Duncan, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen Douglas and their efforts to establish the railroads in Illinois, choosing Decatur as the main hub. The statue will remain on display at the Decatur Public Library following the dedication.
