The marker is located 1.5 miles east of the intersections of US 45 and IL 142. It is on the north side of the road near the intersection of IL 142 and Moore Road.
In 1816 Congress appropriated $8000 dollars to survey and construct a road from Kaskaskia on the Mississippi to Shawneetown on the Ohio. It became an important east-west thoroughfare for settlers entering the Illinois Territory. At this point the Goshen Trail, which ran from Goshen settlement near Edwardsville to the Salines, near Equality, joined the Kaskaskia-Shawneetown Trail.
