In 1900, while working his way through Lombard College, future Pulitzer-prize winning poet Carl Sandburg rode his bicycle 47 miles to Neponset from Galesburg, staying in a hotel on this site while selling stereoscopic views of the area. Later, while riding the train through Neponset at night, he wrote a poem about the village.
Pods
Pea pods cling to stems.
Neponset, the village,
Clings to the Burlington Railroad Main Line.
Terrible midnight limited roar through
Hauling Sleepers to the Rockies and Sierras.
The Earth is slightly shaken
And Neponset trembles slightly in its sleep.
